HBAN to host 2014 European Business Angel Congress bringing 350 business angels to Dublin
HBAN, the all-island umbrella group responsible for stimulating angel investment, is today announcing that it will be the official host for the 14th EBAN Congress in 2014, bringing the European business angel community to Dublin. It is Europe’s largest angel event and the second biggest in the world.
The conference will be held in Dublin Castle on 19th to 20th May (www.ebancongress2014.org) and will be attended by up to 350 delegates. It is forecast to bring in a minimum of half a million euros in revenue to Dublin, over the course of the two-day event. It is Europe’s largest angel event and the second biggest in the world.
The EBAN Annual Congress is the most significant event in the European business angel calendar. International investors and business angels, including some of the leading “super-angels”, along with venture capital firms and early stage fund managers, will come together to discuss the European business angel landscape, how to support and grow it and most significantly to share their knowledge and experience of investing.
According to the most recent research carried out by EBAN, the European business angel market is continuing to grow, with €5.1 billion invested by business angels in Europe in 2012, a 19% growth in comparison to 2011.
Across the island of Ireland, in 2013 alone, business angel syndicates and networks invested €8M in 50 early stage businesses, with an additional €18M raised from other sources such as seed venture capital funds, Enterprise Ireland and other private investors.
Michael Culligan, national director, HBAN commented, “It is worth noting that these figures only represent the visible or formal business angel marketplace. International research shows that the total business angel marketplace can be an estimated eight to nine times greater than the formal market.”
Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton TD, who will open this year’s conference, commented: “Seed and venture capital plays an important role in the Government’s plans for jobs and growth, and within this angel investment is hugely important in supporting the high-growth businesses that will create the jobs we need. Today’s announcement that a major European conference in this area is coming to Dublin, bringing hundreds of leading angel investors with millions of euro to invest to Ireland is a major boost for the sector here. Enterprise Ireland will be taking full advantage of this opportunity to introduce our high growth businesses to the assembled international angel investors and I look forward to taking part in this event on 19th May”.
Michael Culligan concluded, “We are delighted to be bringing the EBAN Congress to Dublin. Ireland is a leader in the area of business angel investment, as was recognised when HBAN received the 2013 European Federation of the Year award from EBAN. Being awarded the hosting of the 2014 European Congress provides us with an excellent opportunity to further raise awarness of the importance of business angel investing to the start-up landscape on the island. Our aim is to use the congress to grow the business angel community and enable further investment which will support jobs growth in internationally traded start-up and growth businesses.
“Those who attend this conference play a vital role in early stage investment for businesses across Europe and in enhancing the entrepreneurial spirit that will help us continue the recovery from the current economic difficulties. Their support and interest in working with young businesses is enabling innovation to continue and new jobs to be created in multiple sectors”.
The EBAN Congress 2014 is being supported by Eversheds, Enterprise Ireland and InterTradeIreland, all of whom will be attending the conference to discuss insights on the Irish start-up and entrepreneurial market. The Irish Business Innovation Centres (BICs), Invest Northern Ireland and Fáilte Ireland are also supporting this important event for Business Angel investment.
